This photo is a studio photo postcard of Margaret Graham and her husband Robert Graham and an unknown woman. Robert married Margaret on June 28, 1920 in Chicago. In Oct 1922, they relocated to the Los Angeles area.

Margaret, formerly Margaret Knowles became Margaret Jordan after her first marriage and then Margaret Graham after her 2nd marriage. Margaret regularly indicated she was born on March 19, 1878 in Montreal though her christening record indicates April 19.

In the photo, Robert Graham is in the middle and has his left arm around his wife Margaret. Bob has a ribbon, perhaps an award attached to his shirt, suggesting they were at an activity that day. He also has something attached to the right side of his belt, perhaps keys or a watch. The woman to the viewer’s left is a bit of a mystery. It is not Margaret's sister Muriel. One possibility is it is Bob's sister, who likely lived in Chicago. It had to be a close relation as it is unlikely he could have put his arm around another woman other than a sister.

Hmmm! You are probably saying. Something doesn't seem right in that last paragraph. Why did he refer to all the boys in the photograph as Jordans? Did he really mean there were two brothers named James? And what became of the son named Joseph? And why is he talking about the Schöldbergs on Our Jordan Family web pages.

Since they came back to Chicago in the summer of 1933 for the Chicago’s World’s Fair, Bob would have turned 59 in August and Margaret would have been 55 which seems reasonable for how they look in the photo. And it is reasonable to assume they stayed a while to spend time with various relatives such as Bob’s sister.

The water tower is a backdrop in a photographer’s studio. It may be representative of a city they were visiting or more likely it was taken at an exhibit at the Chicago World’s Fair. In either case, this particular water tower location hasn’t yet been identified.

For the three photos during during Bob and Margaret Grahams’s World’s Fair visit, the exact months and days are unknown. The Fair opened May 27, 1933 and continued until Oct 31, 1934. I’ve assumed they came in the summer of 1933 and most likely late June and early July as temperatures would have been more pleasant than later in July or August. The 1933 World’s Fair was located at Northerly Island near the Shedd Aquarium.

The Leonhardt family gave this photo postcard to Dave Jordan in the late 1980s. Muriel Leonhardt is Margaret's sister.
